The mission of Weekend Backpacks is to provide food to vulnerable, food-insecure Baltimore City youth to facilitate academic success and improve their lives both physically and emotionally.
Hunger doesn’t take the weekend off.
Imagine being 6 years old, achingly hungry, and knowing your next substantial meal may not come for days. Your days start and end with the pangs of food insecurity.
There are more than 3,000 homeless children in Baltimore City Schools. While they get breakfast and lunch when school is in session, Baltimore City has no state or federally funded weekend food programs for schoolchildren. Studies show that hungry children incur delays in their physical, intellectual and emotional development.
This is where we come in.
A Million Meals & More:*
Despite the pandemic in school year 2020/2021 we filled our backpacks with an abundant quantity of highly nutritious food every week, providing almost a million meals to our schools. Each backpack contains 12-15 pounds of food and provides almost 15 weekend meals to food insecure children.
*More stands for more than food
We also provide school supplies, warm hats, scarves and gloves, personal hygiene items and special holiday gifts.
