The mission of Weekend Backpacks is to provide food to vulnerable, food-insecure Baltimore City youth to facilitate academic success and improve their lives both physically and emotionally.
Hunger doesn’t take the weekend off.
Imagine being 6 years old, achingly hungry, and knowing your next substantial meal may not come for days. Your days start and end with the pangs of food insecurity.
There are more than 3,000 homeless children in Baltimore City Schools. While they get breakfast and lunch when school is in session, Baltimore City has no state or federally funded weekend food programs for schoolchildren. Studies show that hungry children incur delays in their physical, intellectual and emotional development.
This is where we come in.
Weekend Backpacks by the Numbers:*
Each weekend backpack contains meals for kids and their families. Over the last school year, we filled these backpacks with an abundant quantity of highly nutritious food. In the past year we have provided:
Bags of Cereal
Quarts of Milk
Loaves of Bread
*Numbers as of May 1, 2020. All numbers continue to increase substantially as the need continues to increase.
